DESPERATE Senator Jumps on 'Blame Video Games' Bandwagon
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) pushed for a ban on assault weapons, which ultimately was shot down by the likes of Majority Leader Harry Reid. So, what's next? Obviously, blame video games for causing violence. Obviously. At an event, she said to the extent that games don't have redemptive value and "glorify guns." This shows a huge misunderstanding of what games are, as well as what their purpose and narrative are.
She further went on to say that the games industry should regulate itself (which it does) and that Congress would step in and regulate if need be.
The problem there is that video games are free speech. Does she seek to control protected speech? Remember the Hays Code? Or the Comics Code Authority? For that matter- on top of the bleak misunderstanding of what video games are and what they do- why are video games being singled out as the entertainment medium to blame? Why are people who don't understand the medium going about blaming it and tearing it apart to fix the difficult gun control problem?
Would it help if the video game industry had an NRA-type lobby viciously slamming back and threatening politicians who cross them?? Has it gotten to that point?
Stop the scapegoating. Find a real answer to a real problem.
