Can Anyone Own Mars?
212NASA landed the Curiosity rover on Mars last year and interest in private Mars expeditions has ramped up, with projects from Mars One and Inspiration Mars, for example. These groups are sinking millions into traveling to Mars, but what will happen if people successfully land and live there? Can any one person, group, or nation lay claim to the red planet? Will the Outer Space treaty have authority?
Bas Lansdorp, head of private Mars colonization venture Mars One, says he has no intention of trying to own land on the planet. But colonization won't be for several years- things, and laws, could change. What about people who have claimed ownership of the Moon? Or stars? Is space the final frontier...of colonization?
