DESTINY 2 RELEASE DATE Character Transfer NEW Expansion DLC Sub Classes HAPPY NEW YEARS
It looks like Guardians the world over can expect to continue their fight against the Darkness in Destiny for some time to come, as the team at Bungie has announced continued work on additional DLC packs following the previously announced three, as well as another “full game” in the series.
During an Activision Blizzard earnings call yesterday afternoon, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg gave some very brief details about the future of Destiny, which continues to break records and rake in the players despite lukewarm critical reception.
During the call, Hirshberg stated that work has begun on future expansions for Destiny, presumably set to launch sometime after the initial trilogy of content included in the season pass. The first of that DLC is called The Dark Below, and will become available across all platforms on Dec. 9. While the DLC will offer exclusive gear, story missions, strikes and multiplayer maps for paying customers, it will also include some new weapons and gear for all players, as well new bounties and five additional bounty slots for those who are trying to earn glimmer and better firepower with a quickness.
According to Computer and Videogames, who listened in on yesterday’s call, Hirshberg also let slip that another game in the Destiny universe is already being worked on. Considering how long it took for the first Destiny to come out of the oven, there’s no telling what kind of timeframe we could be looking at here. There’s also the fact that Bungie has promoted Destiny as having a planned ten years’ worth of post-launch support, so maybe this new “next full game” release will be something of a spinoff instead? Or, maybe they just decided to take what they’ve learned from the original launch and, instead of bolting more and more content onto the first game, just ditch their original plan and get cracking on a sequel.
We can speculate all we want, but it all boils down to one unsurprising fact: More Destiny is inbound, in the form of additional DLC packs and another game, no matter what form that may take. Fingers crossed for a Sparrow kart racer.
While many ding Destiny for being too repetitive in the late game, boasting a lackluster story and voice work, as well as a world that lacks any real life, that hasn’t stopped players from coming back for more on a daily basis.
That same earnings call yielded some additional impressive figures, including the fact that Destiny now boasts more than 9.5 million registered users. Again, not surprising when you boast the biggest launch for a new IP in gaming history. And those aren’t just people logging in, playing for five minutes and logging out, either. According to the latest figures, the average daily play time for a Guardian is three hours. That’s three hours…A day…On average. Talk about a dedicated fanbase.
