Devil Daggers is an arena based first person shooter. The game pits players against waves of demonic enemies to test how long they can survive.

You will die in Devil Daggers, you will die over and over. Each death a little lesson, and hopefully a few more seconds on your top time.
Developed by a small team in Australia Devil Daggers calls back to the look and feel of early FPS games.

The gameplay loop is simple, you enter a world world where waves of devils come at you and your only goal is to survive. Think geometry wars in hell with a first person perspective and you’ll have pretty good idea. While it might sound simple, staying alive can be quite difficult. Expect to spend a few hours before you will be able to last more than a minute with consistency.

And time is what is at stake here, as every run is an attempt to set a new record for length of survival. The game keeps track of your top times with leader board that allows you to see yourself, global top times, and the times of people on your friends list. While it lacks multi-player, competing with people on your friends list keeps will keep you playing late into the night.

Weapon selection is small, but well implemented. Your weapon is a stream of dagger than come from your hand. These dagger have two modes, either a steady stream or a shotgun like blast that can also used for rocket jumps. The weapon upgrades at various points in the game, based off the number of gems you collect.

The game’s controls contend with the best of arena shooters. Fluid running, turning and rocket jumping are a joy to execute. The consistent and high frame rate will please owners of high refresh rate monitors.

Aesthetically the style is strong and well realized, its brownish color palette and elegant pixel art calling back to the look of the original 1996 Quake, with a heavy dash of ps1 style character modeling and texture work.

Sound design is a high point. Headphones being almost mandatory to take advantage of the directional sound cues. Often you will know seconds before you die where your killer came because you heard their approach. Sound cues serve a vital role of informing the player when to jump and move out of the way or when a dozen skulls are on your tail.

The game is addictive and extremely fun. It’s stark difficulty will be a turnoff for some, yet the game almost always feels tough but fair. You will be able to pinpoint the error that caused your death in most cases. Yet determining what caused your death isn’t always a remedy against repeating said mistake.

The one small gripe I have, is that the game contains a striking difficulty spike at the 30-45 second mark. If you get past this particular moment, you will often last at least another 30, if not 60 seconds. The problem is, repeatedly getting past that moment can be more difficult than the 60-90 seconds that follow it. For me this has worked out that 1 in 8 times I get past 45 seconds, but if I do I almost always last another minute.

At a $5 entry point, Devil Dagger’s is an excellent and under-appreciated title. One that is well worth the time of anyone with even a passing interest in first person shooters.
