Game Review & Impressions

This somewhat obscure coin-op by Konami is a strange beast for sure. The general aesthetics and theming are inspired by the Indiana Jones movies, with a smattering of Romancing the Stone added for good measure, but execution leaves a lot to be desired.
My lasting impression of Devil World is that of a game which, if not clone, something that appears to have at least been heavily inspired by Atari's Gauntlet, without the high fantasy setting or much of the treasure hunting aspect. The game is divided into a series of levels, each with a door hidden somewhere within that leads to the next area. These doors are often locked, and the key required to open them are held by monsters somewhere on the level, or secreted inside one of the many destructible items scattered about the place. Each stage is a frenetic hunt for the key and exit, observing your limited reserves of energy dwindle at a fairly rapid rate, as you spam attacks and enemies and their numerous nests/spawners in a bid to survive.
I didn't like this game at all. The constant pressure and lack of variety in the gameplay was a real turn-off, and an uncharacteristic misstep for Konami. Extra weapons do exist, some more useful than others, but being forced to obliterate an entire level in vain attempt to locate on the few cola cans that restore energy isn't my idea of fun. It might be better with a second player, where there's someone to watch your back and help cover more ground, but the single-player experience is underwhelming. It's always worth checking out at least once, but I can't imagine this ever being much of a crowd-pleaser.
