AMD's mantle is a promising new API (application programming interface) which will allow games developers the opportunity to code low level (code to metal) on the PC. DICE's Johan Andersson was talking to Tomshardware onm the subject.

Johan discusses what Mantle will need to do to capture the PC gaming market, and how Nvidia and Intel may react to the prospect of development for a competing technology. He also discusses the performance and the possibility of a future without directx and instead, OpenGL based.
