The movie’s first draft was horrible, and Russell Crowe wasn’t allowed to read it before meeting with Ridley Scott. The producer didn’t know that he had found a way to get his hands on one already, and he thought it was terrible. According to Russell, it was Ridley’s pitch and countless re-writes that convinced him to sign on. In fact, Russell told the screenwriter, William Nicholson, that his lines are garbage, but he could make garbage sound good since he’s the greatest actor in the world. Russell ad–libbed quite a few lines in the movie, but he couldn’t come up with anything better during iconic lines like, “And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.” William agreed that his lines probably were garbage at the time.
