This is the first Quentin Tarantino film to win an Oscar for acting! Christoph Waltz won the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Interestingly, the role of Colonel Hans Lanad, for which he won the award for, was originally going to be played by Leonardo DiCaprio. But Quentin Tarantino then decided that a German-speaking actor should play the part. However, at one point Tarantino was considering abandoning the film during the casting search for General Hans Landa, fearing he had made a role that was impossible to play. But after Christoph Waltz auditioned, both Tarantino and producer Lawrence Bender felt they found the perfect actor for the part. Christoph Waltz, being a German speaking actor, was the ideal choice for the role, and he even dubbed his own performance in the German version.
