The storyline where Rey is found out to be Palpatine’s granddaughter wasn’t actually in the script originally. When discussing Rey’s lineage throughout the trilogy, Daisy mentioned that it had been up in the air for some time. They considered having her be related to Obi-Wan Kenobi at one point, but they scrapped it. Even after they decided to have Palpatine be the grandfather, the idea was left open ended with plans to possibly change it again. Also, the fight between Rey and evil Rey was actually done to mirror Luke’s fight with his dark self in the swamps of Dagobah.
