480Phyllis was never meant to be in the show! Phyllis Smith was working for the casting director of The Office, Allison Jones, at the time of pilot season. During the pilot screen testing, the show's executive producers were so impressed by Phyllis’ line reading that they created the character of Phyllis Vance on the spot and of course offered the role to her. Safe to say the rest was history after she became a show regular and a favourite amongst the fans.
