One all-too-short-attempt at Dig Dug in the "Namco Museum 3" collection on PS1, plus a little added segment of play where I experiment with the "SCROLL" video option.

The games that play on a vertically oriented virtual screen in the Namco Museum PS1 collections can all be rotated sideways on your actual screen, so that, if you physically rotated your own screen to match, you could play them in their full 1:1 pixel, vertical display arcade game glory (the monitors in the arcade cabinets for these games *were* mounted "sideways"). Note that this "tate" mode as such things are sometimes called is actually a clockwise rotation of the screen, rather than the usual 90 degree *counter*-clockwise rotation.

Anyway, I don't do any of that here 'cause I don't have an easily rotatable screen. : P Since Dig Dug's original graphics, designed for a vertically oriented arcade screen, don't quite fit in a home console, horizontally oriented screen, by default the playfield scrolls a little bit up or down to keep up with your character's digging. You can turn that scrolling off, but then you can actually dig your way OFF THE SCREEN--as seen starting at 7:26.

I always kind of liked Dig Dug, even back in the olden days of the arcade, but for whatever reason--I mean, it is pretty challenging : o--I never really got into it. But now--oh man. It just seems so awesome to me, and this PS1 version is so sharp. And I have so far to go in getting better at it!@! (Checking videos on YouTube I see there are all kinds of clever strategies to employ.) So for now at least my plan is to have the Namco Museum 3 disc more or less permanently installed in my US PS2s disc drive, so I can always have Dig Dug on hand (once my Shinybow 4x2 matrix component switcher arrives on Monday, anyway : D). heart heart baby
