SURVIVING MARS, THE PC GAME
Surviving Mars is a sci-fi city building survival strategy video game about the colonization of Mars. The maps are based on actual photo footage of the red planet made by NASA.
The player is commanding and managing robotic drones and colonists and has to establish a sustainable colony on the red planet. Different economic issues have to be solved and the colonists' needs have to be met for the colony to work. This involves building infrastructure, resource management, research of technologies as well as seeing to the physical and mental needs of the colonists. Disasters can strike the colony. Resources and new colonists can be brought from Earth to Mars. Precious metals can be exported back to Earth and research projects conducted for funds.
The game runs in real time that can be slowed, sped up or halted. Many different storylines (called mysteries) can be chosen.
The video game Surviving Mars was originally developed by Bulgarian studio Haemimont Games (the makers of the Tropico series), later by Abstraction Games. It was published by Paradox Interactive in 2018. The game was favourably received.
SURVIVING MARS, THE MISSION SETUP AND BACKGROUND
In Surviving Mars many choices can be made that determine the difficulty of the colonization of Mars. A company or nation can be chosen as mission sponsor. This ranges from an international Mars mission with the combined resources of Earth to private firms like “SpaceY” to single countries like Russia. A commander profile adds to the challenge: psychologists can support their colonists in case of disasters better than politicians who gather more support from Earth while engineers and researchers have advantages with infrastructure or new technologies. A multitude of mysteries can also be chosen: this ranges from philosophical challenges to artificial intelligence, alien contact or war on Mars. The choices made provide unique advantages, disadvantages and challenges and exciting discoveries on the red planet.
This game is a simulation of a project that humanity has to inevitably accomplish if it survives long enough. If we want to survive as a species there is no way around the red planet. Insofar the game is of high relevance. It raises important questions for all of us.
THIS SURVIVING MARS LET'S PLAY
In this Surviving Mars Let's Play we will experience a full playthrough that also functions as a tutorial, review and walkthrough. We will see lots of uncut gameplay with commentary and play a full Surviving Mars campaign. As I have no prior knowledge of the game (we are playing “blind”) we are exploring Surviving Mars together.
We play with Europe as mission sponsor and the Artificial Intelligence mystery at 280% difficulty. In the end of this series of game videos I will add a video with my collected thoughts of the Surviving Mars game which will function as a test and review after 100%. Further seasons with different challenges and mysteries might follow.
NEW HERE?
My callsign is Hardball, PlayingHardball. I’ve always loved gaming, particularly games as forms of art and ways of exploring narratives in interactive ways. What I find best about a good video game is that you can create your own unique story. I have been playing video games nearly all my life, on the internet for a few years now. I enjoy a great variety of games but generally lean towards games with a unique and engaging story (like Mass Effect, Disco Elysium, The Witcher, etc), strategy/tactical games (like XCOM, Panzercorps, Total War, Battlestar Galactica etc), and RPGs and CRPGs (like Baldur's Gate, Pathfinder etc). Of course, I am always looking for great indie games too!
