Digital Combat Simulator - flying and landing the F-14 Tomcat to Area 51
Never-ever will I be able to land in Area 51. This landing strip on Groom Lake has the strange bug that as soon as the aircraft touches down it pulls so hard to the side that it is impossible with rudders or nose wheel steering to correct the drift. Every landing on Area 51 end in a crash. This happens to the F-16, the F-18 and the Tomcat and I will consider it notifying it as a bug, because I can land anywhere else. (Especially with the very easy to fly F-16, she smoothly glides and touches down and almost lands as easily like a rocket-driven Cessna 152.)
But not on Area 51.... maybe this is not a bug but the landing strip on Area 51 is made for UFOs and antigravitations-vehicles only and has strange magnetic forces or even distortions in gravity pulling any earthly aircraft into the desert with no rudders or NWS strong enough to counteract.
I consider the F-16 as a very easy to fly plane, it`s my space-Cessna my personal rocket, and after a few flying hours I can fly her perfectly.
But the F-14 is a whole different beast, a very hard and difficult to fly plane with no computer aided flying help of any kind, it is fully flown hands-on all the time and also landed fully manually with manual thrust and speed control on a very hard to read speed gauge. And the F-14 is not forgiving the slightest mistake or handling error.
Even the flaps or parts of the landing gear are ripped off the plane when extending one of these while still flying too fast.
The General Electric F-110 is a wonderful turbine, 7800rpm N1 15.000rpm engine-core and 2400km/h exhaust speed, and one of these fine motors is also used to drive the F-16.
