Discs of Tron Arcade Review
35Greetings Programs! Here's another look at Bally/Midway's Discs of Tron from 1983!
I've wanted to get another video of the game due to how hard it was to record gameplay inside of an environmental unit. The unit here at Flippers is known as a "Cut Environmental" cab. Due to the size of the original unit the game sold poorly and Bally ended up making a standard model and cutting the cockpit potion of the cab to make it fit into smaller places.
This smaller cut cab is the same game as the larger environmental cabs without the stereo sound surround sound that you get from the speakers mounted inside of the machine behind you. It also has some digitized voices which sadly break down due to the age of the machine.
This game was supposed to be included in the original Tron arcade game but due to time and memory limitations they ended up scrapping the disc battles and made it into it's own separate game.
In the game you control Tron against Sark on the Game Gird. You can throw three discs at a time and you also have a reflector shield that can block discs coming towards you, but not reflected off the wall. Sark also has some other ticks up his sleeves like homing bombs and split shot missiles that can't be blocked. As you progress in the game you can aim your discs up and down by pressing or pulling up on the aim nob.
The game was also re-released on the Xbox 360 marketplace.
