Here's a look at the classic SHMUP from 1981, Vanguard! This game was originally published in Japan by SNK and was later brought to America from Centauri. There was a sequel that came out in 1984 but I've yet to see it.

In this classic you need to pilot through zones in order to defeat "The Gond". The game plays a lot like Scramble where you need to dodge a lot of enemy shots and obstacles. Unlike the home versions of Vanguard there's four separate fire buttons rather then shooting the direction your ship is going.

But don't ever forget, Luther destroys The Gond!!
