Much like Undertale that came out shortly after it, Lisa the Painful is an Earthbound-inspired RPG that puts an emphasis on choices and both have a relatively serious story with a lot of quirky humor. The main differences is that Lisa is much more pessimistic and mature than Undertale and while Undertale's choices boil down to preaching "wanton killing is bad m'kay", Lisa has much more difficult decisions varying from sacrificing your own health to save someone, to sacrificing a close friend to save someone. Lisa takes place in a post-apocayptic wastela-WAIT COME BACK! Its actually really original!

In this world all women are gone and a dreadful drug known as JOY is rampant. You play as Brad, a decent guy who has found the last girl on the earth and has raised her as his daughter, naming her Buddy. One day though Buddy goes missing and Brad sets off to find and save her no matter the cost. Like any good RPG things get much more complicated and tragic as the game goes on as Brad comes across men that have overdosed on JOY becoming vile mutants, deal with the sadness of his sister's passing (the titular Lisa), overcome his own addiction to JOY, and come to grips that he may have unintentionally abused Buddy...

Honestly this game pales in comparison to Undertale, but its still really worth a play (its sequel Lisa the Joyful too). I don't remember when this song plays, but it really sums up how the game's darkest moments feel: totally hopeless and morbid with a dash of insanity.
