Chasm is a procedurally generated metroidvania-style action platformer (try saying that 20 times) developed by BitKid, Inc. formerly named Discord Games, LLC.
It was launched as a kickstarter project on April 12th, 2013, fully funded only 2 months later, and finally released July 31st 2018.
In it, you play as a self-named recruit of an order of knights who protect the Guildean Kingdom when needed. You are sent on a training mission to the nearby town of Karthas, a mining community befallen by troublesome monsters
emerging from the local mine. Upon your arrival, the town is deserted save for the elderly mayor. He explains what has transpired, and since the order received the message from Karthas, things have gone even darker and most of the townsfolk
have been kidnapped by the monsters. He asks you to venture into the mines and save the townspeople.
Chasm is a metroidvania heavily inspired by Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, but with a twist. The dungeon beneath Karthas is procedurally generated, save for the locations of savepoints and critical locations. Beyond that,
the game seems to contain all the things that old school metroidvania lovers might expect to find: Simple RPG-mechanics like inventory, equipment, magic spells, characterprogression through XP and the like, the iconic style of map and
much more is all here.
Development initially took longer than expected, but a demo has been available for the game for quite some time. Originally supposed to be released in 2014, it has since been pushed back many times, leading people to believe it was
another failed kickstarter project that didn't turn into anything. It's a true joy to see it released after a bit of troubled development, and the time spent on the game seems to have been valuable. Production values are superb,
animations, spritework and music are all great. This is turning out to be a great metroidvania for fans of the genre to enjoy for years to come.
