Rain World is a 2017 survival platformer video game in which the player controls a part-slug, part-cat creature to survive a hostile, derelict world in search of its family.

HUNTER:
The Hunter is a very different experience from the Monk and Survivor modes, and takes considerable dedication to complete.

The Hunter is carnivorous slugcat, described as being karmically imbalanced.
Despite being called carnivorous, any plants are edible but only give 1/4th of a food point.

The Hunter will happily make a meal out of any dead creature, unlike the other two characters who cannot eat corpses.
On the other hand, common bats will only give 1/4th of a food point for added difficulty.

Karma flowers will not spawn. Predators will spawn in greater numbers, and some which were hidden away in only a few corners of the world or restricted to lineages like the Red Lizard or King Vulture are now much more ubiquitous.

Although the journey will be difficult, the Hunter is adapted to it. The Hunter is faster and stronger than other slugcats, and also has the ability to carry a second spear on their back.

Their heightened metabolism will require more food per cycle than other slugcats, forcing the player to battle for their survival and seek food from dangerous creatures.

The Hunter's journey is significantly different from the other two, starting relatively near the entrance to Subterranean in Farm Arrays. The Hunter holds a strange green neuron fly, a spear on its back, and a pearl in its stomach when it spawns.

The Hunter will also have a slightly more difficult time ascending, as while they start at a maximum karma of 6, "a certain ally" will be less effective, only raising your max karma by one. This means that visiting echoes will be required, and the player will need to raise their maximum karma four times.

The Hunter has a unique cycle counter, starting on cycle 19 and counting down to cycle 0.
If the Hunter dies at or below cycle 0, the player's run will immediately end, their score will be tallied, and they will be forced to start over from the beginning.

At cycle 0 and below, the Hunter will become significantly weaker, suffer seizure-like spasms, and will require more food to survive. If you manage to survive beyond Cycle 0, the cycle count will descend into negative numbers.
Each step below zero will make the effects of the Hunter's affliction much worse, and it will eventually become completely impossible to survive below cycle -13.

GENERAL:
The player is given little explicit guidance and is free to explore the world in any direction.

Through jumping and using debris as weapons, the Slugcat escapes enemies to forage for sparse food used to hibernate in designed (and also sparse) safe rooms.

Hibernation resets the day cycle and saves the player's progress. The player can move between regions by hibernating multiple times without dying. If the player does not reach the hibernation point in time, a crushing rain will begin to pour that can pummel the Slugcat to death and otherwise flood the world.

Upon death, the Slugcat returns to the last hibernation save point and loses any map progress made since. The player also loses a karma point, which are indicated at the bottom of the screen.

The player needs to meet a karmic threshold to reach specific areas of the game. Karma is restored upon reaching a new hibernation area, and the player can shield their current karma level by eating a yellow flower before dying. The flower appears at the start of each area and is re-planted wherever the Slugcat dies.

The enemies spawn at random, such that the player cannot progress through trial and error experimentation. These creatures possess dynamic AI and exist in the game's world perpetually, even when not on the same screen as the player, and don't have preset placement.

Rain World's setting is destroyed by ecological catastrophe and illustrated in pixel art. Its story is communicated through details in the environment, images during hibernation, and holograms from a worm that monitors the Slugcat.
