You have to release water pressure with it in the off position to then pull the handle up. I forgot at first to turn it in the off position. I then had water all over. My model has the pressure button on the side. Many are on the top. You can't pull it until all water pressure is out. Have a bucket 🪣 on the bottom for all the water. Simple swap of new one. You can see the difference. I push it to about every 4 months. Look how black my old one is. These are pricey but worth it. If you wait too long your whole house water pressure goes way down over time.
