Alternative and indie, at their roots, stand more for vague ideas and beliefs than any kind of specific musical styles of sounds, and truly the only real difference is the location of the artist: alternative was the preferred nomenclature of American artists while indie came straight from the British Isles.
Why is it called indie?
The term derives from βindependentβ β which is to say a record label operating independently from commercial, mainstream record companies. Such independent record labels existed long before the iconic labels of UK post-punk era music, such as Rough Trade and Creation.
Why is indie a good genre?
Unlike the pop genre, indie music has more expressive songs that discuss sentiments and emotions that are relatable. Most indie music is not massively commercialized, which allows artists to try out experimental lyrics, sounds and many other beats. Thus, while indie artists may make less money, they have more freedom.
What classifies as indie?
Independent music (also commonly known as indie music, or simply indie) is music produced independently from commercial record labels or their subsidiaries; this may include an autonomous, do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing.
