DJay 95 Plays: Area 88/U.N. Squadron (Arcade) Longplay
3Hey players, DJay here with another longplay on one of Capcom's shmups, Area 88/U.N. Squadron.
Description of the game:
U.N. Squadron (Area 88 in Japan) is a horizontal scrolling shmup based on the manga series of the same name, released in arcades by Capcom in 1989 on the CPS-1 System Board and received a home port on SNES in 1991. The game, like several other Capcom titles, features cameos of Mobi-chan, a chibi version of Mobilesuit Alpha from Side Arms and the Yashichi Pinwheel.
Kutal, a country in the Middle East, has being involved in civil war for many years. An organization of arms dealers banded to form Project 4 in order to gain profits. The profits were so high that Project 4 would start a war in Kutal. Funds were used to create revolutionary new weapons and now used to conquer the globe. However, to confront this, a special team of 3 pilots, Shin Kazama, Mickey Simon and Greg Gates set out to put an end to Project 4's plan for world domination.
Gameplay is somewhat similar in the veins of Konami's Gradius and Irem's R-Type. Players choose between 3 different pilots, each of their aircraft having their own strengths and weaknesses. Before going out to battle, McCoy opens up a weapons shop for players to make purchases of secondary weapons, increased fuel gauge and shields. Players will then engage in battle with enemies whilst avoiding projectiles and other hazards placed throughout the stages. Power-ups include POW points which upgrades the player's shots, fuel power-ups which grant extra fuel should the player receive damage and another one which increases the player's secondary weapon ammunition.
Pick your best suited fighter and go on a mission to prevent Project 4 from carrying out their plans.
