DJay 95 Plays: Pulstar (Arcade) Longplay
3Hey players, DJay here with a new arcade longplay on a Neo-Geo shmup, Pulstar.
Description of the game:
Pulstar is a horizontal scrolling bulletstorm shmup by both SNK and Aicom released in 1995 for arcade, Neo Geo AES and Neo Geo CD. It was then re-released digitally on Wii Virtual Console in 2012, Windows PC worldwide in 2016 and on PlayStation 4, XBOX ONE and Nintendo Switch in 2017 via Arcade Archives. It is considered to be a spiritual successor to the R-Type series due to obvious similarities and known to be the first game that features pre-rendered graphics.
In the year 2248, the first recorded sign of extraterrestrial life was discovered on Mars. Scientists read the signal, but without knowledge of its nature, they warned the world's defenses in case of their intent to destroy Earth. 8 years later, aliens followed the signal to the Solar System and attacked the human space craft awaiting them along Neptune's orbit. Soon after, Neptune was disintegrated, Jupiter was turned into a star and more than half of Earth's continents sank from rising ocean levels. To resist this menacing threat, one of the few survivors of the Pulstar attack force, Kaoru Yamazaki, takes control of the Dino 246 space craft and goes on a mission to save mankind and the Solar System from the alien invaders.
Gameplay is obviously similar to R-Type. However, unlike the R-Type games, the weapon bar is split into 2 halfs, the left turns red as the player continuously taps the shot button and right turns blue as the player holds down the button. Heavy reliance is on strategy and not on destroying everything on-screen. As such, players must make effective use of both the Voyager (similar to R-Type's Force) and IO (similar to Bit Devices). If necessary, players can press both buttons at once to self-destruct the Voyager and do massive amounts of damage towards the enemy with a dangerous emission of energy.
