DJay 95 Plays: Varth: Operation Thunderstorm (Arcade) Longplay (1/6)
Hey players, DJay here with another shmup classic longplay on one of Capcom's arcade hits, Varth: Operation Thunderstorm.
Description of the game:
Varth: Operation Thunderstorm is a vertical scrolling shmup released in arcades by Capcom in June 1992, and one of the last few Capcom games to run on the CPS-1 Arcade system board. It never received a direct home port until 2006 where it was compiled together with other Capcom games in Capcom Classics Collection on PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 2 and Xbox and again in 2021 and 2022 on Nintendo Switch, PS4, XBOX ONE and PC via Capcom Arcade Stadium respectively. The game also features a cameo appearance of Ryu from the Street Fighter series.
On the titular planet, Varth, a huge disaster befalls on its human colony. The colony was run by a 7th generation supercomputer named Delta-7, which controls all the operations of the planet's machineries. It wasn't long until an entity named DUO (Dimension Unbody Offender), often thought of as an evil spirit but as a temporal-spatial consciousness which arose from within the supercomputer. DUO then began to turn Varth's defenses against its own populace and "cleansed" 80% of the planet. The planet's only hope lies in 2 pilots who utilize 2 4th generation computers that are able to resist DUO, the Tanikura F7W SABER (Player 1) and Dakao M-2451 SCIMITAR (Player 2)
Gameplay takes inspiration to that of Capcom's 194X series, with the only difference being the pods instead of wingmen options, which serve as a means of protection against several enemy shots. Two pod formation types include smart pods (Fuzzy in Japan) and Fixed pods (Front in Japan). One hit from enemy fire or collision causes a player to lose a life. Sounds pretty simple right?
Pilot the 4th generation computer equipped planes in a fight to free Planet Varth from DUO's destruction.
