Communication and media expert Howard Rheingold interviews S. Craig Watkins about the themes and aspirations of the 2011 Digital Media and Learning Conference in Long Beach, CA, Mar. 3-5, 2011.

Watkins, who studies young people's social and digital media behaviors and teaches at the University of Texas, is on the conference committee and is chair of a special conference track on "Youth, Digital Media and Empowerment."

"Some of the issues that I'm kind of grappling with in terms of this [track's] topic [are] really beginning to think in more nuanced ways about what are both the risks and the opportunities associated with young people's deeper and deeper immersion into the social media universe," Watkins stated. He then added, "And, more specifically, trying to understand how those risks and opportunities are kind of unevenly distributed across our social landscape."
