"The world is changing faster than ever before. Our world was once characterized by a few elite in control, success based on efficiency of repeated tasks, and the definition of a “good person” as someone that gained knowledge and followed the rules. Changes in populations, globalization, technology, and interconnectivity have transformed traditional power structures. This has opened the way for millions to participate in society in ways that they could not before. We see this take shape in disruptions in how we live and work together. Businesses today have many people leading and innovating simultaneously instead of a few elite in control. The death rate of the Fortune 500 company continues to increase, rapidly changing technologies are changing how we relate to our environment and each other, and protests in the world and political flux are increasing. This evidence illustrates that a changing, networked world has few silos and much less hierarchy. Thriving and creating value is more than acquiring knowledge, it now means developing an ability to adapt to the needs of people and command change. A “good person” must master and utilize cognitive empathy. Our success - as individuals, institutions, and society - increasingly depends on our ability to be equipped with the skills and mindset to create solutions where others see problems, or changemaking. Empathy is foundational to changemaking and in order to build a world of changemakers, every child must master empathy. During my five minutes, I will discuss Ashoka’s approach to tipping society towards a world of changemakers and why this work is of special significance to me. Growing up as a girl of color in South Central Los Angeles, my interest in becoming an astrophysicist after reading A Wrinkle in Time was unique to say the least. My experiences growing up and studying Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford led me to start my own venture to get college students to engage children in Watts in STEM. I had the chance to see empathy at work in the space of ensuring educational equality for all, and I look forward to spreading the
changemaking revolution!"
