On the shores of Lake Geneva
In the halls of wargame bores
I became alpha and omega
Victim of edition wars
At first we were all fighting men
Or mages, clerics, hobbits,
Some of us played dwarves, there were no thieves
And we thought nothing of it.
Time flew on by, and as it did
Our edition war advanced
Assassins, druids and paladins
And worst of them all the bards.
The basic training came and went
And it made us all experts.
Until the wizard Moldvay-Mentzer
Shook the world until it turned.
In aftermath in darkest times,
We battled base sedition
And in those most feverish of times
Came out Second Edition
The forges cooled at TSR
The spirit left the building
But on western coasts the wizards stirred
And plotted their rebuilding.
The third world formed, and came, and went
And so shook the multiverse
The very gods themselves took notice
And judging us, sent a curse.
The fourth world failed, it almost sank
But we rose like a phoenix
The Fifth World promised us so much hope
But in shadows secrets
For those whose role was critical
Gazing on coastal vistas
Their imagination failed us all
Adventuring baristas.
And once again a new world dawns
Our spirits so worn and sore
Spare a thought young soldier friend
For the veterans of the edition wars
