I think RPGs may have too many battles in general. Removing random encounters is something the best RPGs do, going all the way back to Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG, but I don't think it is enough. Many of those battles still have a problem with repetitiveness. That is, you win the battle the same way every time. I think fewer, even longer and strategic battles would be preferable over the many short repetitive battles found in most RPGs.
