Why has basic income not yet been implemented? Is the idea of basic income not future-proof enough? Historian Rutger Bregman explains why we need to make basic income future-proof and why basic income can be a possible answer to many problems we face nowadays.

In 2014 Historian Rutger Bregman put the basic income on the political agenda. After that, nine Dutch cities announced to experiment with basic income. Bregman became worldwide known because of his ideas and is invited as a speaker to explain his thoughts. What happened 4 years after historian Bregman put it on the agenda? And how do we ensure that the basic income can be future-proof?

Thanks to a few episodes from vpro backlight and Rutger Bregman's book Utopia for Realists: And How We Can Get There, basic income has become a topic again. This shows that this ancient idea is an effective tool against poverty and driving new economic activity. Bregman's book became an international bestseller. Throughout the world, basic income is now seen as a possible answer to the stagnating middle income, the growing gap between rich and poor and the robot revolution.

But after the comeback of basic income, the big question is: how do we proceed? Despite all the obvious benefits, governments are not eager to introduce it. Rutger Bregman thinks it's high time to finally get started with the basic income. He thinks it is often mistakenly seen as a socialistic idea. He wants to forge the concept of basic income in the language of our time: a citizen´s dividend or venture capital for the common man. So that basic income by opponents and skeptics can no longer be seen as alms from the government, but as civil rights.
