1994 was a fantastic time to be a gamer. There was so much to look forward too. The Super Nintendo was still in full swing and the news of next generation consoles coming out. People were already starting to think about migrating to the Sony PlayStation or Sega Saturn. I mean both were scheduled for release in 1995 with the promise of 3d platformers, beat em ups and of course Ridge Racer. The SNES’s flame was still burning but was starting to flicker and fade a little with the idea that everything that could have been achieved gameplay wise with it had been achieved for the most part. Mario games, check, fantastic RPG’S check, Super Street Fighter 2 check! All of these games had great graphics and gameplay and seemed to push the boundaries of the system. Enter Rareware a game development company based in Twycross in the UK, who were synonymous for putting out fantastic games on the Snes’s younger 8 bit brother the NES and were continuing the trend with Nintendo’s 16 bit console and believed that more could be done with the hardware. So after purchasing some Silicon Graphic Computer workstations capable of making 3D models and effects only seen in movies at the time, Rare decided to use this equipment to create a game on the SNES that would show something that had never really been seen or done before. Upon hearing this news Nintendo visited Rare and saw some Demo’s of what they were working on and both parties agreed that Rare should create a platform game and that it should be Donkey Kong.
