Known as the Marine, the Doom Slayer, Doom or even just Doom Guy, this demon slaying character from John Romero’s hit franchise has been requested more times than you might expect for a series that until recently only tended to cover cutesy characters. I’ve learnt my lesson about that one. With a brand new game Doom Eternal just around the corner, the time has never seemed better to look at the character in more detail.
The history of Doom Guy is quite an interesting and confusing one, as there is a bit of scattered history and timeline surrounding the Doom series in itself, on some occasions it seems like the character crosses over into follow up titles and in other cases, it’s clearly a different protagonist entirely. A few elements have always been constant though, the character was always left nameless and without a voice as a means of immersing the player in the first person game play and from a design perspective, the character wore an iconic set of green combat armour, alongside boots and and a helmet with visor.
In 2014, John Romero revealed the original concept art for the character on his own twitter page and it highlights just how strong the initial character design was, establishing these key features that would continue to be used to this very day. Many depictions of the character would follow using this as a blueprint and there would certainly be lots of experimentation of how to present this character. Some games would be very faithful, whereas others would make more drastic changes, but regardless of this the character has remained very popular and has made some appearances you may not expect or remember either.
