Donkey Kong, 1981 Nintendo (20 From 1981 #1)
The game that REALLY put Nintendo on the international map! The titular ape and Mario both got their start in this revolutionary game, with so many different stages, great action, a cool story, and wonderful sound effects and music. Mario (who here is named "Jumpman") must make his way to the top of a number of construction sites to reach his abducted girlfriend Pauline. The construction sites are made of girders, ladders, elevators, conveyor belts, etc. and you must climb your way to the top; DK doesn't really get his hands dirty trying to take you out himself-- instead he throws barrels down at you and lets fireballs, giant springs and concrete pies (!) do the dirty deed for him. Mario is a spry bugger and can easily jump the rolling barrels; just make sure you have enough room to safely land. Hammers can help take out numerous enemies (jump under one to grab it), and Mario/Jumpman will keep smashing with the hammer until it expires, but note that you can't climb ladders with it in your possession. Just concentrate on being able to safely get to a ladder, and don't blindly rush into the barrels with the hammer since they can slip under the hammer if you're rushing too quickly. Reaching the top of the last ladder on most stages will make a reunion with Pauline seem likely-- until DK takes off with her AGAIN. The rivet stage requires you to remove 8 rivets (walk or jump over them to remove them, but don't fall through the hole where they were!), while fireballs torment you. Use the hammers to destroy them and they will re-spawn on the OTHER side of the site; so if you already removed rivets on that side they'll kind of be stuck there. DK will fall once you remove all rivets but he'll be back.. the barrel scenario will repeat but now with a diagonally rolling barrel coming down the site to start things off (some of the barrels will have crazy patterns). The elevator stage is so named because of the 2 sets of lifts that go up and down. Don't dawdle riding them or you'll get squished! Here, giant springs hop at the top and drop down; you need to especially watch out for them at the top, since detecting their bounce pattern can be very tough and it may look like you'll be able to climb that ladder, but you *just* get nailed. The last type of scenario is the Pie Factory.. sounds rather non-menacing, but these are concrete pies on conveyor belts that move left and right, possibly switching in the middle of you trying to get your footing! Fireballs also menace you, and ladders near the top collapse, making progress difficult (and possibly allowing fireballs to catch up to you!). Such a classic game with so many interesting layers, and several sequels/spinoffs followed. Go Mario-- er. Jumpman!
