Donkey Kong 64: A Monumental 3D Platformer Adventure on the N64
Donkey Kong 64 is a 1999 3D platformer video game developed by Rareware and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It is the first 3D adventure in the Donkey Kong series and a milestone in N64 history, known for its scope, characters, and innovative gameplay.
The Story:
The plot begins with the villain King K. Rool kidnapping the peaceful Kongs of DK Island and revealing his plan to destroy the island with his gigantic Blast-O-Matic weapon. It's up to Donkey Kong to rescue his friends and stop K. Rool once and for all.
The Gameplay:
Donkey Kong 64 is a "collectathon" in the truest sense of the word. The main goal in each of the eight massive levels is to collect a certain number of golden bananas to enter King K. Rool's fortress and challenge him. But that's just the tip of the iceberg:
Five playable characters: The game features the ability to switch between five unique Kong characters, each with their own abilities and special moves:
Donkey Kong: The all-rounder, strong and able to activate punching pads.
Diddy Kong: Small and agile, he can perform long jumps and fly with his rocket barrel.
Tiny Kong: The smallest, he can slip through small openings and glide using his pigtail as a propeller.
Lanky Kong: Long and flexible, he can stretch and float like a balloon.
Chunky Kong: The largest and strongest, he can move heavy objects and smash walls.
Extensive level structure:
Each level is a huge area filled with secrets, puzzles, and enemies. To find all the collectibles, you'll often have to switch between characters and use their unique abilities.
Minigames and Boss Battles:
The game features a variety of diverse minigames, often required to obtain collectibles. Each level concludes with a unique boss battle, which often tests the Kongs' special abilities.
The Expansion Pack:
Donkey Kong 64 was the first game to require the N64 Expansion Pack. This add-on increased the console's RAM and allowed the game to display its vast environments and detailed textures. Without the Expansion Pack, the game is unplayable.
Graphics and Sound:
Donkey Kong 64 set new standards in graphics for the N64. The environments are detailed and varied, and the character models are charming and expressive. The soundtrack, composed by Grant Kirkhope, Eveline Novakovic, and David Wise, is iconic and contributes significantly to the game's atmosphere, with many catchy tunes and reinterpretations of classic Donkey Kong themes.
