Probably noticed by now, but due to having 99 lives I don't really care for the bonus items or 1-Ups placed around the levels anymore.

This is where things start to become complicated by design, and for the rest of the game it only increases. Several switches, each affecting numerous things at once - or in one particular level here, making a path to the exit using nothing but a limited amount of temporary floors, ladders and springs - can only mean 'make a mistake and it's back to the start'.
