Doom 2 - PISTOL START - MAP 12 The factory
4The first of the city landscape based maps in doom 2. As such this is an open, wide and empty looking map, with several buildings scattered across the area and some creatures patrolling outsidethe main industrial complex.
I think the soundtrack fits this level perfectly, as it conveys an eerie feeling of abandon, isolation and fear. It matches the situation, as at this point our hero is the sole living human remnant on an earth filled with hellspawn.
Do i like these kind of levels? More or less. It often feels like the doom engine isn't up to the task of representing an urban landscape as the whole place feels too empty, sometimes unremarkable and often downright ugly. The map in particular doesn't give you the necessary weaponry right away, and locating the DBS at the heart of the level is of essense, since the are many aracnotrons and mancubi around. Played in a specific route, this map can be somewhat entertaining though.
