There once was a project to create a version of Doom 3 for the Doom 2 GZDoom engine. This is the most recent public release there was ever made.

The author claims the lack of a full/further public release to be the result of using content from a copyrighted game, as if that's ever stopped a Doom modder before. (See: the hundreds of mods including content from Heretic, Hexen, Duke3D, other DOS-era games) Further builds of the game were made available for dev team members and beta testers only. Links appear on the author's website, but all are dead as the project is.
