Doom 64 MAP31: In the Void (All Secrets/100% Kills) Watch Me Die! - Blind Let's Play (UVmax)
Doom, first released in 1993, is considered by many to be the grandfather of all modern shooters and arguably the most influential videogame of all time. No other has spawned as many clones, nor brought its genre into the mainstream to the same extent. Primarily the work of the five individuals (John & Adrian Carmack, John Romero, Kevin Cloud and Tom Hall), Doom expanded on the success of id Software’s prior hit, Wolfenstein 3D.
Doom 64 was released in 1997, four years after the original Doom. While staying true to the original gameplay formula, some significant changes were made in comparison to the earlier games. All enemies and weapons received a complete redesign resulting in a markedly different aesthetic. In terms of tone and atmosphere, Doom 64 is much more in line with Playstation Doom. Aubrey Hodges returned to compose a dark, ambient soundtrack in a similar style to his work on the Playstation port.
Doom 64 was the final installment in the classic Doom franchise and the last part of the story. A new demon invasion has come to Earth, spawned by the gruesome Mother of Demons. Doomguy is again awoken in order to defeat this latest threat. A total of 32 new levels were included, including three secret levels, one super secret and three individual fun levels.
One of the changes made in Doom 64 is the renaming of the difficulty levels. Ultra-Violence is renamed “Watch Me Die!” but essentially it provides the same challenge. As in all my other Doom videos, this is a UV max run (100% Kills and All Secrets). Unlike the original game, there are no maps where this isn’t achievable.
Doom 64 features most of the demons you’ll be familiar with if you’ve played other classic Doom games, including the Doom II monsters. However, there are some notable absences. Commandos, Revenants, Spider Masterminds and Arch-Viles are missing, but in their place there is the Nightmare Imp and new final boss; the Mother Demon. Also new for Doom 64 is the Unmaker, an incredibly powerful laser weapon that gets progressively stronger as you collect the Demon Keys, which are hidden in the game’s secret levels.
Doom 64 was re-released for the first time in over 20 years in 2020, which is the version I’m playing in these videos (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1148590/DOOM_64/). The new port makes use of modern hardware for a significantly improved resolution and framerate. Furthermore, it does not require 3rd party software to function and runs perfectly from a Steam install alone.
The 2020 re-release also came with a new episode known as the Lost Levels. This six level expansion (plus one fun level) is the latest official classic Doom content. Much like the fourth episode of the original game, Thy Flesh Consumed, the Lost Levels include some of the greatest challenges in Doom 64. They also showcase some of the advancements in map-making that were on display in the more recent No Rest for the Living expansion for Doom II.
