Another random old map I wanted to do. I am gonna do a bunch of these. Mostly for the satisfaction of checking stuff of my big list.
Doomsday of UAC, or "UAC_DEAD", was listed on both the Doomworld top 100 wads of all time and 100 most memorable maps lists. It was the 3rd top wad of 1994, and placed 10th on the memorable maps list. Even John Romero said it was "really cool" when he first played it.
The record on this map has been optimized pretty hard, so I didn't go for the record and just stopped when I hit within 1 minute of it. I am happy with that for not having watched the record for reference.
There's nothing I could say about the map that hasn't already been said, but I'll summarize. It is a pioneer of its time. It has some creative, but nonsensical secrets. the progression is... interesting. There are a few experimental mapping tricks here, like using sector 666 twice, but that only works with compatibility level 2. The cyberdemon fight can be really annoying with those lost souls, but running down the invisible stairs after is even more annoying. Those stairs are super slippery and almost feel like they're on ice. I flung myself off them so many times I just had to take it slow this time. I like the proto-doomcute showers and bathroom, and the ending with the spaceship is cool. I think the barrels exploding and the ceiling/floor moving are supposed to be the tunnel collapsing but it confused the hell out of me when I first saw it. The turned over truck with moving wheels is of course the highlight, but load up the map yourself to appreciate that.
