It's the first appearance of the Cyberdemon, and he gets a shoeing for it.
The only difficulty comes in finding cover and killing off the Arch-Viles before they get a chance to fuck things up. With that said, it's not particularly difficult to slap them down and concentrate on everything in front.
As for using the SSG instead of the Rocket Launcher, a few reasons:
1) The SSG does more damage; the RL only does impact damage which is a waste of rockets.
2) The SSG's 20-hitscan attack is more likely to interrupt the Cyberdemon's volley.
3) Have you seen how many shells are littered around this map? It's a no-brainer.
