And DOOM II in Doom Eternal because we just couldn't leave it at one. While it doesn't have the iconic opening of Hangar, or E1M1, it's ending on the Icon of Sin might be the better known one of the two games. And it introduced the idea of hell's dimension itself expanding into earth, which we will see again all later games. What becomes immediately obvious is that the sequel has a much more first-timer (like me) friendly design flow, meaning I could mostly play it without a hitch in solving its map puzzle. And in the case of the map Simple, that is entirely the point. Way more enemies on screen at one time (though much lowered on the easy difficulty I was playing on), more focus on encounters, introducing a great number of now iconic enemies, including the great archvile, and everybody's favorite super shotgun. Lovely in all its ways of being able to both rip and get ripped, and in much more ways than Doom 1 could.
Until I hit the dead stop that are the city levels, where all these lessons in compact encounters are yeeted out the window and you just have to suffer them. Returning to hell was a return to greatness, and it's easy going from there. Though higher difficulties will also give many, many more enemies, which I did not use on this first ever playthrough.
