Why is there a demo bar?
In Doom because runs are recorded into demo files, and demo files cannot save or load, the only way to do a successful doom run, would be to complete the game into one single segment. Which basically means without saves and loads and without dying.
Although some games have deaths that are forced (Ex: Scythe MAP10), or sometimes you can complete a level faster by killing yourself as well (e.g. MAP17).
