And so we finish Sigil. While the initial release definitely has its gameplay issues, I think the high points of episode 5 definitely outweigh the low. E5M8 itself, however, is one of the low points. It's pretty underwhelming for a final level. You can tell he wanted it to be very action-packed, but it's just too easy to sit back and cheese the Lost Souls, and the teleporter trap after the red key switch is just too slow to spew monsters, and that takes the tension out of both situations. Additionally, the map has too many cell packs making it very easy to spam the BFG if you picked it up before (and even if you picked it up here). I'm not sure how it is on a pistol-start, but it could probably use a few more shells. The map is also a bit too dark, as well; some extra light sources (if it's possible in more limited source ports), wouldn't be unwelcome.
All that said, I thoroughly enjoyed the entire set of maps, even with some of the problems, and I love the clever ideas Romero brought to the table.
Doom: Sigil E5M8 - "Halls of Perdition"
Sigil is a new megawad by Doom co-creator John Romero to celebrate Doom's 25th anniversary, taking its place alongside the original Ultimate Doom episodes as episode 5. It features nine brand new single-player/coop levels and nine deathmatch levels. I'm playing Sigil v1.0 (v1.1 is released at the time of uploading) on Ultra-Violence difficulty on the GZDoom source port.
There are 350 views in 9 videos for Sigil. There's close to an hours worth of content for Sigil published on his channel, making up less than 0.54% of the total overall content on Ghastly, the Tinkerer's YouTube channel.
