Doot Eternal: A Retrospective of Doom Modding's Most Significant Music (Part 1)
On December 10th, 2023, Doom's 30th anniversary, a team of prominent Doomworld Community members published an article titled, "Doot Eternal (a.k.a. Meow That's What I Call Doom Music)" to celebrate 30 years of Community-made MIDI music for various WADs.
It not only recognizes some of the most musically significant WAD soundtracks, but goes on a journey over the last three decades by exploring how custom music for fan-made WADs has evolved since Doom modding began.
In this first part, we discover the origins of custom WAD music and go on a nostalgia bender by revisiting popular WADs from the 1990s and meet the composers who paved the way for custom soundtracks to become commonplace. These entries come courtesy of James Paddock, Dynamo, and Mikolah.
