DOSember '23 - Eojjeonji Joheun Il-i Saenggil Geot Gateun Jeonyeok Playthrough
1What started as a typical Sunday with plans for a variety of games, turned into a gauntlet to finish 1 beat em up. Eojjeonji Joheun Il-i Saenggil Geot Gateun Jeonyeok is a DOS beat em up from 1997 based on a manhua. The manhua actually did come out stateside but sadly it was done by Tokyopop and was named Lights Out.
The story stars Gunn Namgoon who has just recently transferred high schools because of all the fighting he got up to. Of course he can't live a peaceful life as his wallet gets stolen by pickpockets and later people keep challenging him to fights. In fact, there's an entire chapter of this game that takes place during a flashback when Gunn remembers when he was an absolute monster, always fighting. There's a nice little arc for his character here, even if its kinda glanced over by the game (I'm sure it's fleshed out in the manhua).
As for the game itself. Well this is a brutal and long beat em up. It has limited continues, no lives, no checkpoints, no healing items in the stage, and enemies can just randomly take out your entire health bar incredibly quickly. You do get EXP which during screen transitions you get to level up multiple aspects of Gunn, including his technique, damage, and health. The health is very very important, also continues. Absolutely brutal game. Fantastic sprite work and redbook audio soundtrack. Has a cool juggle system and combos but getting too fancy is a good way to die. This would get a sequel called Storm but that's on Windows and is for another day.
