It turns out Down Load 2 has a silly easter egg mode, where most of the popcorn enemies have been replaced by parodies (or blatant reuses) of characters from JP pop culture. The game itself is the same, the bosses don't change either, so it's more a visual thing than an actual different mode.

Getting access to this mode requires some little tricks. Here's how to do it (You can find it on sites like GameFAQs and shit, I haven't figured it out myself lmao) :

Access the debug menu on the title screen by pressing Select, I, II, I, II, I, II, I, II, I, II, and then Select again. This should give you a screen that's similar to my first frame in the video itself. On that menu, go to the "Demo" option and select the last one (it should be 9) as to trigger the game credits.

Let the credits play (you should really fast-forward lol), and when it's about to end (with the final NEC SOFIX text showing up), hold Up, II, and Select. The game should then kick you to the debug menu once again, but the Stage option should have a "c" in its value this time. Change this value for a stage and it should let you play the Crazy Mode thing. I started with Stage 1 in order to do an actual clear of the game at the same time since finishing a stage will progress to the next like in any normal run. Good thing getting consistent clears is not too insane once you have a strat and memo'ed some nasty spots like Stage 4. I even died once in stage 6 but that's one of the few places in the late game where that isn't catastrophic so I was spared the need to redo the whole thing lol.
