So, after sacrificing the Keep and saving the city, we are told that the Darkspawn that gave us the message (the one sent by the Architect) has also given us the location of the Mother and asks that we go murder the hell out of her. Which we go and do. Well, not before a massive Dragon swoops down out of nowhere in particular and tries to fight us for some reason. The area that we fight him in is similar, if not the same, from Morrigan's DLC where we did fight a dragon, this time it felt random to encounter one now since I expected there to be Darkspawn, not dragons (Even if you make the case that the Archdemons are Dragons, that would mean that there was another Blight but that this Blight was less important than fighting the Mother). Regardless of why the Dragon was there, we have to fight it in order to progress.
