This is video #002 in my playthrough of Dragon Quest XI: 過ぎ去りし時を求めて (Echoes of an Elusive Age). I am playing the Japanese version for the Sony PlayStation 4. In this video, I start the game and name my protagonist Davilas (ダビラッス).

After Davilas is named, the opening cutscenes play (time 0:53). Those little see-through characters are most intriguing.

Afterwards, we fast-forward 16 years (time 4:57). The boy is now considerably more grown up. He returns a wayward scarf to a girl, Emma. She has a dog named Ruki.

Then, I gain control of Davilas at the Foot of God's Rock (神の岩 ふもと) (time 6:24). Emma is currently a guest with him. Davilas starts at Level 1 with no spells or abilities. He comes with an Ishi Sword and an Ishi Greatsword. He can equip swords and greatswords. In the way of armor, he has the Plain Clothes.

The townspeople of their hometown, Ishi Village, are gathered at the Foot of God's Rock. The northeast path leads to Ishi Village, but Davilas cannot go back there just yet.

To the southwest, Davilas and Emma must approach their parents (time 11:17). Emma's grandfather is Dan, the village chief, and Davilas's mother is Perura. Davilas and Emma have just turned 16, and to prove that they have come of age, they must climb God's Rock and pray at the top. Ruki the dog will serve as their guide.

A little farther south, a scene occurs as they approach the monument (time 14:08). There are some interesting patterns carved on the exterior of God's Rock. As Emma discusses their task, Ruki alerts them to the arrival of dangerous monsters: Slimes!

Then, it is time to battle the Slimes (time 15:14). They are not too dangerous; just attack until they are dead. Ruki will help out. At the end of the battle, the Slimes may drop a Medicinal Herb.

Another scene will occur after the battle (time 16:14). Ruki guides the way towards the cave.

On the southern side of the nearby monument, a chest contains a Pot Lid shield (time 17:10). Davilas can equip this right away if he is using the Ishi Sword.

To the west, Davilas follows the path into God's Rock (time 18:13). He and Emma must now make their way through this area.

At the first intersection, he turns north (time 18:42). By tapping the confirm button, the player can direct the character to climb the ledges. At the base of a tree, there is a farming point for Medicinal Herbs (time 18:54).

As Davilas turns south, he gets a tutorial about striking monsters on the field (time 19:09). When the pointer is over them, you can tap the confirm button to strike the monster on the field. This will deal a little damage to the monsters before the battle starts.

After a couple of battles, Davilas reaches Level 2 (time 20:48). He learns "Mera," or Frizz, a fireball that strikes one enemy. Note that on level-up, the party member's HP and MP will be refilled.

Soon afterwards, Davilas lucks out and gets a Slimedrop (time 21:53). Yay!

To the south, Davilas goes down a path leading west. It leads to a couple of pots (time 23:30). In them, I found 5 Gold and a Medicinal Herb.

A little farther along the main path, Davilas finds a farming spot for Copper Ore (time 24:00).

Following the path, Davilas goes outside (time 25:07). It is pretty smoky outside. They find Manoro, a village child being threatened by monsters called Smokes.

Afterwards, Davilas must fight a pair of Smokes (time 26:09). This should not be a tough battle. Ruki will help by attacking the Smokes and intimidating them, and Emma will help by throwing Herbs and Single Phials at the protagonist.

At the end of the battle, Davilas reaches Level 3 (time 27:05).

Another scene ensues afterwards (time 27:19). Emma assigns Ruki to help guide Manoro back down towards the village. Then, Davilas and Emma will continue their climb up God's Rock. There will be no more help from Ruki, but that's fine.

We regain control out at the cliff face (time 28:23).

In the northwest, there is a farming point for Beautiful Branches (time 28:36).

To climb the cliff face, Davilas climbs the vine ahead of him and then sidles along the narrow passageway. After dropping down, he can use the confirm button to climb up the short cliffs.

This leads him into another cave (time 30:02). The cave generally leads up and south.
