Dragon Warrior II [NES] Playthrough #16, Wellgarth: Jailor's Key & Watergate Key; Gold Trick
This is video #16 in my Dragon Warrior II playthrough. The party has just battled the ferocious Saber Lion and won the Moon Crest from the king of Osterfair. Now, it is time to continue exploring the world on their trusty ship.
From Osterfair, they sail south until they get close to the island where the Flame Shrine is located. Then, they turn west and begin sailing along the southern side of the southern continent's long, tail-like peninsula. Some way up the peninsula, they find the town of Wellgarth (time index 2:00).
At first, there seems to be very little to this settlement. A man and his dog are outside by a fire, and there is a shack nearby with a Golden Key door. However, the Golden Key door blocks a stairway that leads down into the true town!
A lady down here sings a nice song for the party. One gentleman here gives the party advice on acquiring the finest Water Flying Cloth.
The main reason for visiting Wellgarth is to obtain a couple of keys. In the west part of town, the tool shop has an interesting blank space in his shopping list (time index 5:52). This blank space is the Jailor's Key! It costs 2000 Gold.
One gentleman in town has information on breaking through Hargon's cloak of deception. A soldier also has information about the road to Rhone. That is a ways off, though.
The jail is in the northeast part of town. In the northwest cell, an old man tells the party about the Eye of Malroth, the only thing that can help one find the Road to Rhone. In the northeast cell (time index 8:15), the party can go through the middle of the east wall to find the escaped convict, Roge Fastfinger. He hands over the Watergate Key.
There is some good, expensive stuff on sale in this town. There is a nice little trick that we can use to make a lot of Gold in a short time. To take advantage of this, the party heads back to Midenhall Castle (time index 11:10).
Using their repertoire of keys, the party can get to the prisons in the northeast of Midenhall Castle. One of the convicts has information about the Crest of Life.
However, we are more interested with the convict guarded by a Golden Key door, damage floors, and a Jailor's Key door. This looks like an ordinary old man, but he is really an Evil Clown enemy. He has some fairly strong group attack spells, but his HP is pretty low. After battle, he drops a Staff of Thunder.
After the battle, the party can go to the item shop and sell the Staff of Thunder for 19,500 Gold. Very nice!
To make the Evil Clown respawn, the party has to save the game, reset, and reload. The Evil Clown will be back. The party can keep this up until they earn a total of 65,535 Gold, which is the maximum that they can carry in this game.
Back in Wellgarth (time index 18:30), it is finally time to trade in Talint's musty old Leather Shield for a Shield of Strength. The Shield of Strength is one of the most useful shields in the game, in fact, because a character can use it in battle to cast Healmore on him- or herself for free. Also, the hero trades in Erdrick's Sword for the Light Sword. But the Sword of Erdrick sells for only 2 Gold? What's up with that?
Back in Midenhall, while the party abuses the Evil Clown for more Staffs of Thunder, Kailin reaches Level 12 (time index 23:35) and learns the Antidote spell.
Back in Wellgarth (time index 26:45), the party gets a Mink Coat for Talint.
After grinding more Staffs of Thunder in Midenhall, the party returns to Wellgarth (time index 29:00) to get Kailin a Mink Coat. Wow, those Mink Coats are *expensive*.
Thanks for watching!
