Dragon Warrior II [NES] Playthrough #26, Charm of Rubiss; Through the Road to Rhone
This is video #26 in my Dragon Warrior II playthrough. There is one last item that the party will need before heading to Rhone. In sailing south from Midenhall, you may notice a one-tile island with a shrine on it. This is the Spirit Shrine, the party's next destination.
The party leaves Beran and sails northwest to the Spirit Shrine. When they arrive (time index 3:00), they go downstairs ... and downstairs ... and downstairs. Finally, when it seems they can go no longer, they arrive at the bottom. When they step on the white tile in the middle of the shrine, the holy enchanter Rubiss speaks to them. Since the party has gathered all five Orbs, she gives them the Charm of Rubiss. This will prove useful in exploring Hargon's temple.
Not that the party is actually ready for that hellhole yet, mind you. If the Road to Rhone is dangerous at this point, Hargon's temple is absolute murder. I just want to get all this collection out of the way.
Upon their return to Beran (time index 6:25), the party rests up and saves. Then, they take the teleporter to the Rhone Shrine (time index 7:40). In the Rhone lowlands, the use the Eye of Malroth once more to gain entry to the Road to Rhone (time index 8:30).
I am going to focus on taking my party through the Road to Rhone as quickly as possible. This dungeon is long, so conserving MP will be a priority. Kailin's best means of attack is to use the Staff of Thunder. For healing, have the appropriate party member use a Shield of Strength in battle as much as possible rather than using healing magic.
On the entrance floor, there are pitfalls at various points. The party goes east and north to the northeastern up staircase.
On the second floor (time index 9:07), remember that this floor is a loopback maze. To progress, the party has to go west once and then go north through the third opening that they reach. The staircase in this room will take the party to the third floor.
On the third floor (time index 12:07), the party follows the main path as it winds to the northern end of the room. Then they take the eastern path to a stairway going up.
On the fourth floor (time index 15:03), the party will be in a tiny area where the up staircase is close by. Up on the fifth floor (time index 15:06), the party navigates carefully to the up staircase directly to their south. Carefully follow my path here to avoid the numerous pitfalls on this floor.
Up on the sixth floor (time index 15:16), the exit is within reach. However, the route to the exit can be very confusing. Several room exits will actually teleport the party back to the beginning or to other areas of the floor. There will also be lethal enemies here, such as Green Dragons and Vampirii.
The party starts in a crossroads. First, they take the east exit. Then, in a T-shaped room, they go north and take the northwest exit. Next, in a reverse-J-shaped room, they take the northeast exit.
They will arrive through the northwest entrance of a room with other exits to the southwest, northeast, and southeast. At that formation in the middle of the room, there is a pitfall in the corner, so be careful. The party takes the southeast exit.
Next, they will arrive in a room with exits to the southeast and northeast. They take the northeast exit.
The next room is a reverse L-shape. The party takes the north exit.
Then, the party reaches a room with exits in the northeast and northwest. They take the northwest exit.
In the next room, there are exits to the east and north. The party takes the north exit.
The next room is a T-shape with northwest and northeast exits. The party takes the northeast exit.
In the next hall, the only other exit is to the southeast. After they go through it, the party finally finds the stairway leading out!
When they emerge (time index 20:08), they will be in the snowy highlands of Rhone. The wildlife here is even more brutal than in the Road to Rhone, so they make tracks northeast to the Rhone Mountain Shrine.
The Rhone Mountain Shrine (time index 20:46) is a very welcome port in the storm. The priest here will revive dead party members and fully restore the party's HP and MP for free, as well as saving the game and setting the shrine as the Return point. Even better, the travel door nearby takes the party to the Rhone Shrine way down in the Rhone lowlands, where the party can return to Beran if need be.
With all these benefits, the Rhone Mountain Shrine is the perfect base for mounting leveling expeditions to the Rhone lowlands, the Road to Rhone, and the Rhone highlands.
Thanks for watching!
