Dragon Warrior III [NES] Playthrough #21, Portoga, Norud's Tunnel, & Baharata
This is video #21 in my Dragon Warrior III playthrough. Armed with the Magic Key from the Pyramid, the party can now travel to Portoga. Starting in Romaly, they head northwest to the Northwest Romaly Shrine.
In the shrine (time index 1:56), there is a Magic Key door blocking a stairway. This takes them to a tunnel leading to the western side of the river. Outside, they go south into "Spain." On the southeast side of the peninsula is the next city, Portoga.
When the party reaches Portoga (time index 4:08), they find a nice little port city. Some of the people here are going on about pepper and how rare it is. The only shop in town sells items; no new equipment.
The main aim of visiting this town is to go to the castle (time index 7:45). The castle is out in the northwest section of Portoga's bay. One merchant type in the castle tells the party about a shrine to the east where people can change profession. Sounds like a good place to check out! Behind a wooden door, there are three treasure chests amid a damage floor. Owie! The treasure chests contain 88 Gold, a Vitality Seed, and a Spider's Web.
In the throne room (time index 9:40), the party talks with Portoga's king. He instructs the party to go east and acquire some pepper. In return, he will give the party a ship. Sounds helpful! He even gives the party a Royal Scroll for that pesky Norud the Dwarf in the tunnel east of Assaram.
So, the party Returns to Assaram (time index 10:40). After resting, they set out northeast to Norud's Tunnel (time index 11:56). The tunnel is pretty straightforward. After going through the door, they head east and then north to Norud's humble abode. Norud has some minor treasures for the pillaging. The dwarf is none too welcoming until the party gives him the King of Portoga's Royal Scroll. Then, he rushes off to open up Bolef's Path.
The party passes through the secret passage and emerges on the eastern side of the mountain range. They will be in an area with new enemies, but as long as the party is around Level 15, things should be all right. In fact, Heorot quickly attains Level 15 (time index 14:09 - 14:34) and learns the Outside spell.
From the exit of Norud's Tunnel, it is a fair hike south and then east to the next town, Baharata, in "India" (time index 19:05). This is the town that sells black pepper, but unfortunately, there is a problem. Galen's girlfriend, Tania, has been kidnapped. When the party talks to Tania's grandfather, the old man asks the party to go seek Tania. Unfortunately, Galen runs off to try to save her himself. Really bad idea. The party will have to go save Tania (and Galen) before they can acquire the Pepper.
Thanks for watching!
