Before Nier Automata, there was Nier. The alternate Japanese version of Nier, known as Nier Replicant, was remastered in 2021. Apparently, only the main character was changed. (You play as a brother, not a father).

Before Nier, director Yoko Taro made Drakengard, a series known as Drag-On Dragoon in Japan. I've been told that the Nier series takes place in an alternate timeline based one of the endings in Drakengard 1.

I should note that Drakengard 3 is not an open world RPG, but a tiresome linear brawler hobbled by awful technical issues, which are on display here. To be fair, the dialogue and English voice acting are surprisingly good. So good, that I would rather watch a Youtube playthrough than ever play this game again.
